The Bread Gate is a fan game based on Ultima VII: The Black Gate, released in 1992 by Origin Systems.

Inspired by the bread baking/feeding part in the base game, this game tries to jokingly replicate the scene of the Avatar feeding companions frequently during the game.

This game only takes you a few minutes to beat, but you can keep feeding Iolo as much as you want ;)

Developed in Unity by yulotomorrow in 2021. All custom art assets made by me.

The Avatar in this game is my OC version.

I have never played Ultima, but I was drawn to The Bread Gate and Avatar's Music Classroom because of the pretty artwork. I could feel the love for Ultima in both of them as I played them. I especially love the first cartoon tutorial of The Bread Gate!

I'm interested in Ultima and will play it eventually!

Never thought of the Avatar as a smol girl.  Iolo as a complaining hungry mouth to feed is not surprising.

Here I always fed Iolo sticks of butter!

This was a neat little game! ^_^

I was a little sad that I couldn't prepare one loaf while the previous was baking, I will admit. It might also have been nice if the controls for taking flour and water were the same as the controls for moving the bread--interaction would have felt more consistent that way, I think.

On the other hand, the interactions that were there were well-implemented, and felt pretty good to play out. ^_^

All that said, the game was cute, and was more fun than I expected it to be! Plus the whole concept was amusing, especially given the Avatar's motivation for the whole thing! XD

You also captured very well just how annoying the feeding mechanic in Ultima VII can be! XD;

Overall: well done! ^_^

First, thank you for playing my tiny game!

I I'm really grateful for your feedbacks! I'm actually aware of many of the limitations of the game, and I think it doesn't hurt to share some of my thoughts on them since it's just a tiny memey fan project ;)

One of the reasons that the interactions are so limited is because this is my first game, and I wanted it to be short and fast, from the aspects of both making and playing the game. In my design documentation (is it too serious to write documentation for such a small thing?) I called the game loop "1-to-1 feeding", which I intended to expand if I'd ever push the game further. The other aspect is, I'm trying to partly imitate the features in Ultima VII, such as the different ways to apply flour and cook bread.

I'm really glad to see this game made Ultima fans happy! That's the main goal of this project :D

Regarding the interactions being limited, that's very fair! If anything, it's perhaps a good thing that you didn't entangle yourself with more-complex mechanics on your first outing. So, perhaps take my critique there less as something that should have been done differently in this game, and more as something to think about for later games. And since you're already aware of it, all seems well!

As to design documentation, I don't think that it's a problem if it's part of your process!

As to imitating Ultima VII, I'll confess that it's been long enough since my last playthrough that I don't recall what the player had to click on and what could be dragged, so fair enough!

Anyway, I'm interested to see what you make next! ^_^
